Short answer

You have the right to dispose of waste at a recycling center if you are transporting household waste from a private individual in the same municipality. This also applies when you collect waste via an advertisement on Tiptapp.

In-depth analysis

Private waste transport

When you collect waste from a private individual and transport it to a recycling center, this is considered private waste transport. This means that you are transporting household waste for another private individual, under the same conditions as if the individual had delivered it themselves.

This does not count as professional waste management.

What you can explain at the recycling center

If the staff stops you, you can explain that you are transporting private waste. You are helping a private individual take their household waste to the recycling center.

You then dispose of the waste under the same conditions as the owner of the waste.

What the law says

The Land and Environment Court of Appeal (case no. M 2066-20) has ruled that services where private individuals help other private individuals to transport waste are not covered by the rules for professional waste management under the Environmental Code.

Good to know

  • Waste must be disposed of in the same municipality where it was collected.

  • The cost of recycling centers is normally covered by municipal taxes.

  • Collaboration between Tiptapp and certain recycling centers can simplify verification, but is not required in order to dispose of waste.
